Private tennis lessons in Southwark

One-to-one coaching for adults and juniors, from complete beginners starting to rally to experienced players working on technical and tactical details.

How lessons are planned

You do not need to fit a fixed programme.

Level labels are useful, but they do not tell me everything I need to know. Two beginners may want very different things: one may simply want to rally with friends, while another is preparing to join a club. An experienced player might need a technical adjustment, help with a recurring match situation or a focused hitting session with useful feedback.

I decide what to cover by looking at how you currently play, what you want to improve and the pace that suits you. Each lesson has a structure, but I do not take every player through the same sequence.

Lesson levels

What lessons can cover at each level.

Complete beginners

Learn the basics at a comfortable pace.

Early lessons cover a suitable grip, a balanced position at contact and simple movement, with plenty of time spent learning to start and sustain a rally. Rules and scoring are introduced as they become relevant, so you learn them while playing.

Lesson aim: Know where to stand, how to prepare and how to return the ball with control.

Improvers

Make your good shots easier to repeat.

We work on spacing, recovery, a more dependable contact point and how direction, height and pace affect the ball. Drills then lead into realistic points, so you learn when to use each shot.

Lesson aim: Fewer things to think about and a practical way to practise between lessons.

Intermediate players

Improve the way your technique, movement and decisions work together.

Sessions can cover rally tolerance, serve and return patterns, transition play, defending under pressure and point construction. I may use video or detailed technical feedback when it helps explain the main priority.

Lesson aim: Make your game more reliable while keeping the strengths that already work for you.

Advanced players

Work on a specific technical or tactical problem.

Sessions are based on the demands of your match play, including first-ball patterns, court positioning, changing direction, taking time away and handling pressure. I adjust the exercises as we go so the work stays relevant to the problem.

Lesson aim: Use realistic repetition to turn precise feedback into a change you can apply in competition.

Inside a lesson

What a typical lesson looks like.

The content changes from player to player, but most lessons follow the same broad sequence.

  1. A short assessment

We begin by discussing your experience and watching you move, rally and play the shot you want to improve.

  2. One main priority

We focus on one detail at a time, choosing the one most relevant to the shot or situation we are working on.

  3. Use it in rallies and points

Technical work then moves into movement, rallying and point situations, so you can recognise when and where to use the change.

  4. What to practise afterwards

We finish with one simple focus or exercise you can recognise and repeat after the lesson.

Adults

Learn without feeling rushed.

Adult lessons can be recreational, fitness-led or performance-focused. If you are returning after years away, we rebuild rhythm and movement gradually. If you already play regularly, we can concentrate on the situations that affect your matches most.

Juniors

Learn sound habits through movement and play.

Junior coaching combines sound habits with an active session that is easy to follow. Ball feeds, court size and exercises are adapted to the player's age and experience. They also learn how movement, technique and decision-making work together.
